The Brownsville Municipal Court maintains jurisdiction of all parking, traffic and class "C" misdemeanors occurring with in the city limits of Brownsville, Texas.
The bulk of the cases that are handled by the Court are Traffic Violations. These violations are enforced in Brownsville by the Brownsville Police Department, the Brownsville Independent School District Police Department and the Texas Department of Public Safety. If you receive a traffic violation from anyone of these entities in the City of Brownsville, the citation will be given to the Municipal Court.
Parking Violations are a civil affair, however, it is the responsibility of the Municipal Court to collect on parking violations. To contest a parking ticket you can request an administrative hearing with one of the judges. If you received a citation for parking in a handicapped space without a handicapped placard, bring your handicapped parking placard to the court along with your driver's license. The first instance can be dismissed at the cashier's windows. Additional offenses can only be cleared by seeing the judge.
Class "C" Misdemeanors
Class "C" Misdemeanors consist of public intoxication, driving under the influence, theft, assault, disorderly conduct, just to name a few. When charged with a class "C" misdemeanor you will be brought by the officer to the City Jail where you will be detained until the nearest Arraignment. Arraignments take place in the morning and any obligation you are given you are required to keep. Please note: if you are given a Bind Over (cash) Bond or a Personal Recognizance (PR) Bond. If the judge allows your bond, any licensed and bonded Bail Bondsman can issue a bail bond.
